What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition caused as a result of excessive sebum production due to increased androgen level and blockage of hair follicles with oils and dead skin cells. It may appear as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or painful cysts depending on the skin condition. Acne can be temporary or permanent skin condition. It can be cured if properly treated in early stages otherwise it causes scaring or permanent damage to the skin.

Treating Acne with Pantothenic Acid:

Acne is treated by controlling sebum production, combating bacterial inflammation and removing dead skin cells causing clogged pores. Treatments depends on the age, severity and skin conditions. Treatments need consistency as acne can’t be treated overnight. It may take four to six months or may be more.      This can be done with home remedies or medications suggested by dermatologists. Dermatologist’s suggested acne treatments are of many types i.e. topical and oral medications, injections and lasers therapies etc.

What is Pantothenic Acid?

Pantothenic acid (also named as vitamin B5) is one of the most effective component for human body. It helps in the formation of blood cells and convert food into energy by synthesizing carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It is a necessary vitamin for sex and stress-related hormones. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) also helps in maintaining healthy skin and hair. It also helps in healing wounds, controlling obesity, dizziness, dandruff, headache, low blood pressure, low blood sugar and many other issues. It plays an important role in breaking down the toxins and drugs in liver.

Sources of Pantothenic Acid:

Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble vitamin of B group vitamins. Our body does not store it and excrete it through urine. That is why pantothenic acid intake is very important for our body. Pantothenic acid is excessively found in both animals and plants. Animal sources of pantothenic acid include chicken and beef (especially kidney and liver).  Avocado, corn, tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, soybeans, sweet potatoes, split peas and cauliflower are plants sources for pantothenic acid. Whole grains, peanuts, oatmeal and cereals have a good quantity of pantothenic acid. It is also found in fish, egg yolks and dairy products like milk and yogurt.  Pantothenic acid is found only in fresh and non-processed food. Processing and boiling of food eliminates the pantothenic acid from food.

Pantothenic Acid Acne Treatment:

As acne is caused due to excessive sebum production of sebaceous glands. Pantothenic acid treats acne by decreasing sebum production. This happens when pantothenic acid increases Coenzyme-A (CoA). CoA is a molecule of Pantothenic acid which is used for fatty acids metabolism and other biochemical reactions at cellular level. Deficiency of CoA slows down the metabolism of fatty acids resulting in more oil production in sebaceous glands. Pantothenic acid intake increases the Coenzyme-A in the body thus reducing the oil production by sebaceous glands causing acne.

Pantothenic acid supplement helps in controlling acne and fading acne blemishes and scars after 4 -5 months of use. Pantothenic acid is safe and feasible for the skin. It gives promising treatment for minor to moderate acne. It has to be taken in high dose to treat acne and the amount of its dosage depends on the age and the skin condition. Pantothenic acid supplements should only be taken on the prescription of a dermatologist or a skin specialist.

One of the main advantage of pantothenic acid intake is that your body does not have to deal with its deficiency. Other advantages of pantothenic acid includes:

  • Presence of pantothenic acid in the body protects against acne by increasing the Coenzyme-A which controls the oil production of sebaceous glands.
  • Pantothenic acid helps in keeping the skin moisturized.
  • It helps in controlling blood pressure and low sugar level in the body.
  • It helps in healing wounds, headache, leg cramps and diabetic nerve pain.
  • It maintains healthy skin and hair and also controls dandruff.
  • Its deficiency causes dizziness, obesity, asthma, baldness, allergies, tongue infections and osteoarthritis.

Besides advantages, pantothenic acid also have some side effects which includes:

  • It is needed in high dose to treat acne.
  • High dose of pantothenic acid causes diarrhea, insomnia, vomiting, burning feet and depression.
  • It does not give long term effects as it is not stored by our body.
